Roof Moss and Lichen in Blackpool: What Should Homeowners Know?

The Fylde Coast's wet, windy conditions can leave shaded roof slopes damp. Moss and lichen are worth assessing, but they don't automatically mean a roof needs replacing.

Distinguish growth from defects

Moss forms clumps that can trap leaves and hold water. Lichen forms flatter patches on tile surfaces. Neither can be diagnosed fully from a ground-level photo alone.

Check drainage first

Look at gutters, valleys and visible downpipes. Heavy growth can trap debris; water running behind a gutter or across a wall may require a different repair as well as surface cleaning.

Choose a method suited to the roof

Aggressive pressure jets and hard scraping can damage coatings, loosen tile material or drive water under laps. An appropriate method depends on roof material, age, condition and access.

Know when a roofer is needed

Loose tiles, recurring leaks, damaged flashing or obvious movement are repair issues, not merely cleaning issues. Ask for an assessment before paying for cosmetic treatment.
